How to Write a Brand Positioning Statement (With Templates)

By the Brand.bz Editorial Team · 7 min read · Updated

A positioning statement is an internal sentence that defines who you serve, what you offer and why you are the better choice. Customers rarely see it, but it shapes everything they do see — your headline, your pricing, your ads and your product roadmap.

The classic template

For [target customer] who [need or problem], [brand] is the [category] that [key benefit]. Unlike [main alternative], we [unique difference].

Each blank forces a decision. If you cannot fill one in, you have found the weak spot in your strategy.

Filling in each part

  • Target customer: narrow enough to picture a real person. Include context, not only demographics.
  • Need: the job they are trying to get done or the frustration they feel.
  • Category: the frame of reference customers already understand ("bookkeeping app", "coffee subscription").
  • Key benefit: the outcome, not the feature. "Close your books in 10 minutes" beats "automated reconciliation."
  • Alternative: what customers would do without you — including doing nothing.
  • Difference: the reason to believe. It must be true, provable and meaningful to the customer.

The onliness test

A simpler, sharper variation asks you to complete: "Our brand is the only [category] that [difference] for [audience]." If the sentence feels uncomfortable or untrue, your differentiation is not yet strong enough — or you are trying to serve too many people.

Examples (fictional brands)

  • For first-time home cooks who feel overwhelmed by recipes, Panly is the meal-kit service that teaches one technique per box. Unlike standard meal kits, we focus on skills, so customers cook confidently without us.
  • For freelance designers who lose hours chasing invoices, Paidpath is the invoicing tool that follows up automatically in the designer's own voice. Unlike generic accounting apps, every reminder sounds human.

Turn it into customer-facing copy

Your homepage headline is usually the key benefit; the subheading names the audience and difference. Test the statement with your team: if everyone can repeat it from memory, it is working.
